documentary premieres at Sundance
“The Interrupters,” a documentary on the CeaseFire violence prevention
program at the UIC School of Public Health, premieres this month at the Sundance
Film Festival. The documentary by director Steve James (“Hoop Dreams”)
and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz (“There Are No Children Here”)
tells the story of two men and a woman who work as violence interrupters for

renowned jazz vocalist, pianist and composer Patricia Barber has joined UIC as
a lecturer. The New York Times calls Barber a “literary critic, philosophy
student and needling social commentator rolled into one.” She received
a Guggenheim Fellowship for composition in 2003.

discuss the movie with audience members.
The film is about immigrants facing misfortune in their pursuit for a better
life in America and dealing with issues of cultural assimilation.

Alumni Poetry and Fiction Reading
Discover the work of two promising young writers and mingle with professors,

College of Dentistry student Mateusz Wietecha received the Most Outstanding Presentation
in Basic Science Research award at the 16th Hinman Student Research Symposium. With
support from the Dr. Isaac Schour Scholars Fund, he researches blood vessel growth
during wound healing. His winning presentation was about a protein called Sprouty2.
Five former Flames will be inducted into the UIC Athletics Hall of Fame Jan.
28 at the 2011 UIC Athletics Reunion and Hall of Fame Banquet. Head athletic
trainer of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, Mike Gapski, will receive
a Lifetime Achievement Award.
