Title: Cryptozoology
Author(s): Funk, Tiffany
Abstract: "My interest in both cryptozoology and prosthetics led me to experiment with the construction of various masks that allow the wearer to explore the world from the point-of-view of a mythological creature. This mask, Communication Prototype no.1 (""Moraine Monster"" / ""Beast of Bray Road"" sitings, c. 1960-2010), gives the researcher the ability to communicate or ""harmonize"" with an imaginary cryptohominid through use of miniature embedded Theremin-like circuits. The resulting whine is meant to mimic the call of the invented creature. Whether or not one believes in such legendary creatures as Bigfoot or the Mothman, the stories generated by these sitings communicate very real issues pertaining to ethnography, ecology, and post-colonialism. If Bigfoot did exist, how are we forcing it out of its natural habitat? What would become of Bigfoot if it were forced into ex-urban, and even urban environments? How would Bigfoot endure subsequent marginalization and exploitation?"
