Title: Altogether Oz (2^8 frames at once)
Author(s): Mausert, Andrew
Abstract: I am interested in representations of time, and how they change depending on perspective. One could remember a moment in the past and call forth tactile details like sounds and smells that deliver the feeling of being present in that memory. Only, in memory, the present is affected equally by events in the future (relative to the memory) and those in the past (relative to the memory). If my dog died when I was 10, my memory of her at age 8 will necessarily be informed with a keen sense of her mortality. From the perspective of memory, a distinct moment in time does not exist. Modern physics shows that distinct moments in time cannot be defined uniquely by observers in relative motion. Cinema, however, has had a fundamental dependence on frames—representations of distinct moments in time. Altogether Oz, is an attempt to dissolve these moments. Using a rendering machine built in Processing (, a four minute, thirty second clip from The Wizard of Oz is re-imagined into 15 different videos with incrementally expansive “present” s. The first video plays exactly like the source clip, while the 15th is every image and sound of the source clip, all at once. The video and frame that I have submitted is from the eighth rendering.
