A Case of the Blues: Serotonin toxicity caused by the use of methylene blue and antidepressants

My research at UIC is studying digital art tools and how they are used to address the visualization of scientific research. I use 3D modeling and digital painting tools to create pieces addressing problems within the medical field. My submitted image depicts serotonin toxicity that occurs when methylene blue, a dye used during parathyroidectomies, is injected into patients taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This type of antidepressant, as well as methylene blue, blocks the reuptake of serotonin.
