Future UIC CUPPA Hall and Master Gateway

The UIC Master Gateway Plan for UPP 551, Physical Planning II, includes the existing CUPPA Hall, the CTA/Peoria Street Bridge, and the vacant field at the northwest corner of Harrison Street and Halsted Street. The feature component of this plan is a state of the art campus facility for the CUPPA program. This building would incorporate efficient building systems such as a green roof, terraces, large pedestrian plaza with permeable pavement, underground detention, and a cisterns containment system that will be used to irrigate the surrounding landscaping. In addition, the building is designed in a manner that is sensitive to the surrounding context. To bridge the gap between the north and south, the structure incorporates a step design with a 2 to 4 story element along the south property line and 6-story element at the north property line. The structure will have a steel and masonry finish and is highlighted by a glass rotunda, which maximizes the amount of light into the building. The building has been angled at the northeast corner in order to maintain the established view corridor for the residents living in the student housing buildings to the south. Other key components of the plan include the Gateway Bridge/Park, which would extend and link the main UIC campus to the facilities on the north side of I-290, a new, six-story mixed use building with affordable residential dwelling units, and a four story parking garage.
