"Photo Probes is an interactive exhibit designed to provide museum patrons with a fun, hands-on introduction to endoscopic procedures. As a proposed feature in a larger showcase exhibiting medical imaging technologies, Photo Probes allows the user to perform virtual endoscopies and colonoscopies in a simulated OR environment. Using a gaming controller designed to simulate actual endoscopic equipment, patrons guide the camera through the digestive tract in order to accomplish one of six medical objectives (i.e. exploratory probing, polyp removal, etc.). While performing an endoscopy, footage of real procedures are displayed on monitors across from each station, enhancing the OR experience. As a graduate student in the Biomedical Visualization department, I have become absorbed in finding new and innovative ways to educate through entertainment, especially on the topics of medicine and the sciences. As I have found in my research, immersive, interactive experiences are core to creating memorable, informative and enjoyable education-entertainment media. This exhibit was designed to challenge conventional methods of learning and bring the pioneering world of medical technology to the public."
