My research in the Almaguin Highlands in Ontario, Canada examines the massive changes occurring throughout the North American countryside in the early 21st century. Lands once used for agriculture and logging are being transformed into recreational and residential space for tourists and retirees. In June 2010 a retired farmer took me on a drive through some less traveled gravel roads to show me that although these changes are occurring rapidly, there are still plenty of locations in these rural areas that have not yet been gentrified. Beyond this bullet-ridden stop sign is a small farm...and countless signs warning trespassers to move along.
