My PhD research in sociology involves studying the voices of children and youth in relation to educational inequality. This image, a photograph of a public school bus covered in graffiti, documents the students’ dissatisfaction with the Federal government as shown by the phrases "Withoute Justice No Peace," "It says, 'Govt by the PEOPLE' NOT by the President" and "STOP Global Warming." The irony of the spelling of "Withoute" is further commentary on the state of public schools in this country, particularly in urban areas, similar to where this bus was photographed. This photograph encapsulates my research interests in its portrayal of the voices and perspectives of youth, a group that has historically been silenced within the discipline of sociology. These voices, juxtaposed with an American symbol of equality (a public school bus), inform my research on the perspectives of children and youth.
