A biological pathway is a description of a series of actions which occur in a cell. A great effort is made by biologists to delve into the structure and the behavior of biological pathways. This effort leads to an enormous quantity of data, which require to be properly visualized. Even though commercial solution exists, the scientific community is still looking for proper visualization solutions that capture certain aspects of the pathways structures, as well as enabling new kind of user interactions to explore the complexity and the huge extent of the pathways networks. My research examines the state of art regarding the existing tools and solutions and it focuses on the design and development of novel visualization tools for representing and analyzing biological pathways. It will follow a comparison between my work and already existing solutions, with particular regard to the scalability, interactiveness and visual clutter.
