Modelling and Design of a Crankshaft Decoupler for Internal Combustion Engines

The object of this thesis is to investigate the mechanical power requirement to the front end accessory belt drive system. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the dynamic behavior of the system under normal operating conditions. The prototype model was built based on a belt drive system that is currently still being tested. The purpose of this thesis is to assess the effects of the geometric design variables on the average performance of the front end belt drive system and how they contribute to the optimization of the current design. The model was validated using data collected at an industrial company which designs and manufactures belts, tensioners and pulleys for the automotive industry. Once the structure of the whole system was identi ed, it was schematized and studied using a discrete-system approach. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was performed and potential solutions are sought to enhance the design and performance are proposed.
