This dissertation sought to explore how private tax-exempt/nonprofit hospitals were addressing the social determinants of health (SDOH) as a result of a changing health care environment in Chicago. Using an exploratory qualitative multi-case study design, this dissertation explored the following:
· Hospital leaders’ perspectives on the role of private tax-exempt/nonprofit hospitals in addressing the SDOH
· The type of SDOH activities and approaches that private tax-exempt/nonprofit hospitals were undertaking
· How private tax-exempt/nonprofit hospitals were implementing these types of SDOH activities and approaches
· The facilitators and barriers to undertaking SDOH activities and approaches
