Methods for finding essential surfaces in 3-manifolds have been given in several seminal papers in 3-manifold topology and geometry. This thesis continues in this vein by giving simple, sufficient conditions for a spunnormal surface to be essential in a compact, orientable 3-manifold with torus boundary. The proof utilizes a result from tropical geometry.
